Believe in Something :: Why We All Need To :: Do You?
79People Need Faith and Hope
No one can tell you what to believe in. But people need to believe in something. It is a basic human need unlike any other. Even if you just believe in yourself you are better off than those who find they have nothing to believe in.
I was raised in the church. For some that means they have ministers in the family. Well, starting with now and heading backwards let's see. My brother is the Music Minister of his church, my sister's husband is the Pastor of his church. My uncles on my dad's side were ministers and deacons of their churches. Oh and the my Great Grandfather on my mom's side and on my dad's side were also ministers, pastors of their churches.
When I was young there was a group called Youth for Christ that all of us belonged to when we were old enough. My sister first, then my brother, then me. They had a really great outreach ministry to high school and college kids. Now you have to understand this was the late sixties and early seventies. The world was a much bigger place back then. Now you can visit Rome on the PC but then it was books or airline tickets.
Anyway, I have gotten off topic, the point is that people need to believe in something, but our country has made it difficult to find belief systems now because of being politically correct. You can't pray in school, or wear any logos that might suggest any type of faith. One kid got sent home from school for dressing like Jesus for Halloween... This country sure is free.
Kids get in trouble for wearing a shirt to school that says Merry Christmas... at Christmas time?
And people need something to believe in. They need faith and hope. Without faith and hope what do we have? I dread the day they try to take hope away too. Part of the problem with the world is that people are too afraid of stepping on someone elses toes to stand up and say what they believe in.
I believe in God. I believe that without him my life has no meaning. I believe he blesses me and leads me where I am supposed to go, even though I don't deserve his guidance. I believe that gives me the responsibility to share this belief with others.
We live in such an amazing time. You can literally find information on any topic on the internet and more is being added every day. You might find the things that were taken away from you by all of those well wishing voters who thought it better to leave things out of history that cause conflict. Open your eyes and your mind and your heart.
Read everything you can get your hands on, and if you don't understand it the first time, read it again. Some of it will astound you and amaze you. You will find that there is much to believe in. Starting with you.
Believe in yourself, that you can find the truth amidst all of the lies. Have faith in yourself that your life here on earth is not insignificant. Life is what you make it, don't let anyone tell you different. This world is here for us to live on and take a living from, not to destroy. We are merely stewards of this earth for the time we are here, holding it in trust for the next generation. Don't spend that "Trust Fund" and leave nothing for them. Look at what you can do each day to make a difference, whether it be recycling or walking to the mailbox instead of driving.
Once you start to believe in yourself, you might find it easier to believe in others. People are basically good when given the chance to be. But most of us have already been taught not to give them a chance to hurt us or use us.
Back in my day they sang give peace a chance... Now they say we have to give war a chance. If we let the war go on long enough it will work? Wow it is a good thing John Lennon wasn't here to hear that.
I am not a political person, but maybe now it is my responsibility to be.
Until we can stand up and say what we believe in, without fear of rebuke from others, and until we can hear each other out, without saying 'Oh I have heard that before' we will not be free. We cannot be one nation until we all agree. We need our beliefs, we need our faith. It is who we are, and how we live from day to day.
What do you believe in?
I love my family. Often they send me e-mails they want me to pass along. Occasionally they send me one that seems slanted against a particular faith or group of people. They ask me to pass these on to others. I love my family, and maybe their source is or seems beyond reproach. I do not pass these on. Sometimes we need to show temperance.
I read them with a grain of salt and then ask myself what I believe is right.
I believe that there is one God. I believe that in the course of time people have written down what they believe about that same God. Oh yes, He has many names. We have many languages and therefore each language has their own name for him.
Just as each culture has it's own language, they each have their own rich history, full of heroes and villains, saints and prophets as well as sinners and psychopaths. You need only to study our own to see, you wouldn't want the world to think all Americans were Charles Manson. So in the course of your search, do not think any race creed or religion is in reality the same as the acts of the few. Think rather that there would be no Catholics at all if all of the Priests molested children.
Open your mind, your eyes and your heart. Ask for wisdom when you are reading, and try to understand that there is good and bad in everything. Without evil we would not know the meaning of good. As without darkness we would not embrace the dawn. Find the light of the world as it shines for you, and then let it shine for others too.
Faith is a gift from God. He will give it to you. You will find something to believe in. It will ring true to you, and you'll think "Yes that's it! I finally found it!"

I do not consider myself to be a religious person but I try to be thoughtful, kind and consider others. I admire your outlook on life, you seem to have such a positive attitude and I enjoyed your article. I think BIKTMIA has a valid point that it would be beneficial to anybody suffering from depression. Thankyou for brightening my evening with your positivity :)
Although I was not really expecting a reply the optimist in me saved this page! So thankyou for your response :)
I think your belief in God is as valid as any other belief or lack there of, and I did not find your article preachy at all. If anything it had a "live and let live" vibe.
