Book Burnings:: Controversy:: Of Prejudices and Misunderstandings

By Faybe Bay

A Month ago I might have said:

Kids today have no idea what it was like growing up in an era when books were banned and albums burned!

If you really want to see something, kids, check out the history of the Beatles. Our generation loved them until John Lennon said "We're more popular than Jesus..."

What follows is a video of excerpts from the news surrounding this issue.

This is 2010, right?

I will not go into rhetoric of who was at fault for 9/11. We all have our opinions as to what really went on. We know that in some places in the world The Holocaust is being removed from the History books. It seems there isn't any point in mentioning any religion in this country, as may I point out that it was long ago decided we should take the Bible out of schools, because it was not believed by all students. That too is a type of book banning. Perhaps for me the whole book burning/banning thing is worse because "Fahrenheit 451" is one of my favorite books, and I believe it should be required reading, along with "To Kill a Mockingbird", if you haven't read either of those books then this hub will probably not appeal to your way of thinking.

Here's the truth as I see it:

Art, for art's sake and writing, for art's sake, is sacred. If you listen to anyone whose read Mein Kampf they say it is a work of genius, and yet reading reviews of it make my flesh crawl, due to the prejudiced nature of the volume. Yet, if I may be so bold as to use this as an illustration of the sickness that has infected our country "In Mein Kampf, Hitler uses the main thesis of "the Jewish peril," which speaks of an alleged Jewish conspiracy to gain world leadership." (re Wikipedia, cited History Today) Now any of us who have half a brain would know that none of what Hitler believed was true, and yet today there are neo-nazi groups who are allowed to hold meetings and even attempt to recruit our children into their ranks.

When I personally commented that a musician (Cat Stevens now Yusuf Islam) was not a terrorist, I was repeatedly attacked in the comments section on YouTube! It became such a huge deal that I ended up giving up on the hub I was going to write about Cat Stevens, and am writing this one instead.

To blame a group for the actions of the extremists in that group is ridiculous.

Nazis are white supremacists. Just because my skin is white does not make me a supremacist, by the same token, not all supremacists are Nazis, because there are black supremacist groups as well, not all supremacists are white.

Not all Muslims are members of Al-Qaeda. By virtue of this fact alone it should become apparent that burning their religious book, the Koran, or any book whatsoever is not going to be sufficient to stop terrorism, nor is it in any way a heroic act, but simply an act of destruction.Vandalism and destruction are for their own sake the opposite of creation.

I hate to speak of the intelligence factor...

When one weighs the intelligence of a man who says the reason he is burning the Koran is because it doesn't say Jesus is the Son of God, well just think about his statement. If that's the case then he should also be burning the Torah, the Talmud, and all Buddhist writing... Then lets get out Darwin and Plato and Socrates... Oh heck, why don;t we just dig out every book without "Jesus is God's son stamped in it somewhere, and burn all those as well.

We have the whole world watch as news stations from across the country and overseas all report on this man and his 50 parishioners; then also have the matter brought before the courts and the military leaders for discussion! It's just way too much press for someone whose intelligence has most definitely dropped below that of the average fifth grader.

Is it any wonder then that some jerk would go near ground zero and burn pages from the Koran? The video was uploaded immediately to the internet and YouTube, while the burning was happening! Everybody wants to be famous, don't they?

Let's face facts:

Anyone can go on line and find out that the war on terror was started, not to get the people who brought down the towers, but to boost the popularity of a president who was not unanimously elected.

Because of the war, our economy was supposed to get better, by decreasing the surplus working population. These are the facts, folks, I don't make this up. I have nothing against going after the bad guys, but even on the day, there was too much discrepancy in the news.

The plane that hit the Pentagon vaporized on contact, yet the bricks remain, Flight 93 vaporised when it hit the ground... The towers came down too fast, too easy... Ask anyone who has ever witnessed the scene of a single plane crash, or anyone in the military, what would cause a plane to disintegrate, or vaporize on contact, and they will give you an answer. It won't be the answer you want to hear. Only a missile, and it would have to be properly sized. Now about the flight 93 passengers calling their family members... I couldn't get a call out that day on a land line and no one could get through on their cell phones to family and friends. What exactly are the odds that these passengers could... Don't take my word for it read this in depth analysis.

Even now, nine years later, we don't know the truth, and the videos on line have been tampered with, so none of that is evidence any more. I mean, there's footage on line of the first plane hitting, where did that come from? There is footage of the Firemen nearby being filmed, and the camera turns as the first plane hits.

There's other footage that shows the plane shooting a missile at the building before impact. We'll never uncover the truth. Heck, we don't even know who really shot John F Kennedy yet, and those records have been tampered with and most of the people who that would affect have died. Yet people think we can solve 911? with a few book burnings...

These are the issues that divide us, and these issues are making us hate each other. Isn't it somewhat hard to believe that in the 60's, less than fifty years ago, people were burning Beatles albums because John Lennon said they were more popular than Jesus with the youth, and now, the youth have grown up, and are burning the Koran... What's that they say? Raise up a child in the way that he should go?

Come on people, have we no brain cells left?

Hi Faybe; Let me be the first to congratulate you on your courageous but necessary call for sanity. I'm sure you're bound to receive all kinds of flak from extremists of all types.

History is full of leaders who somehow get weird twisted ideas in their head, and stir up hatred, and somehow gain followers. This is wjere it becomes dangerous. If your neighbor started spouted such hatred, you'd probably just think he's a wacko.

It's when it becomes a widespread group mentality, pulling in impressionable and disenfranchised people to their cause, that makes for a dangerous situation.

I don't understand what it is that makes so many people so willingly close their minds to reason in such an absolute and dogmatic way. It boggles the mind.

Just goes to show..power is corrupting in the wrong hands.

Everyone needs to take a deep breath, step back from the edge, and re-asses their thoughts. Let sanity prevail for a change.

Thanks Tim! I know this may spawn a heated debate. I'm okay with it. I would have had this up sooner, except I was warned yet again to do my research. I went to the sites I was told to look at and they were all connected to Nazi sites! My favorite was one explaining how badly women were treated, but in the end showed the criminals who treated the Islamic women badly being brought to justice.

I hope anyone reading this realizes that in some countries they still cut off the fingers or hands of thieves. We, as US citizens, have no right to dictate any other countries laws, crimes, and punishments. Believe me, there are people in this country (Lawyers?) who take great pride in being able to set guilty criminals free, they go to school to learn how to do it, and then get paid exorbitant fees for doing it. On top of that, our government forces these fantastic lawyers to take cases for which they do not get paid.

There are deaths at the hands of these criminals who "lawyers" made sure were set free...

Really, think about what's going on in our justice system, before you tell me we have to got to war, to fix someone else's.

I am in Saudi Arabia, never hear any comments or anything here about book burnings, the bulk of the people just get on with the lives and totally ignore the rest of the world!

The people here on the whole do not care about what America does or any other country, it is not their concern!

However I am sure if I walked into a mosque and tried to burn a copy of the quaran I would not walk out, but why would I do it? Just to pick a fight?

Why can't people just let other people be, why does it matter what other people think, believe or do if it does not physically impact on you!

I am totally by coincidence listening to Cat Stevens while I am on the computer....

I am not a Muslim, I was raised Christian, but I work in a Muslim country, they protect their heritage and their religion to maintain their way of life... If people don't like it here they leave, very simple!

I don't see them climbing into their tanks and fighter planes to come bomb Christian countries into becoming Muslim, these are the actions of a mere handful of crazy people, not Muslims, not Saudis, not Pakistanis, Not Afghans, just plain CRAZY people!

Rant over... nice hub..

God Bless you LeanMan! That's what I'm talking about! You are there, you can give us the straight truth! In the US it's all propaganda! It makes me feel like beating my head against the wall when I have to listen to the ravings of prejudiced people who have nothing better to do than incite hysteria. Thank you for a bird's eye view of what it's like over there!

Hi Epigramman, Thanks for the kudos! I love Purple Rain, and Prince. What a real Star he is, such a performer, and then he would lift up other artists and show them off to the world. Might have to do a hub about him, too.

I'm with you 100% on this hub. Nobody should be burning anyone else's religious works, or secular works, for that matter. ( P.S., I love Purplre Rain, too, it's a classic.)

Thanks for the support Paradise, I really appreciate it! I think book burnings are preposterous, and certainly not anyone's freedom of speech!
