How to Understand SEO and Hub Pages Keywords

Look What I Found

I can hear you laughing already...

Faybe Bay is writing about SEO. This should be hilarious. Hopefully! Don't leave yet! At my rate of education this may have taken me three days to write, so I am asking you to stay and learn with me!

For those of you who don't know, Sunforged came up with an idea, a 60 day Challenge. 30 Hubs in 30 Days, followed by 30 days of promotion. Great, because I have no idea what I am doing in the traffic department. Ironically, the job that I got laid off from? The transportation department of a huge electrical contractor. Specialty? Traffic control and monitoring systems for Florida's turnpike! So here I am, on the information super highway, and not a clue how to control or monitor the traffic. I had to learn, just today, to adapt what I know, to my new surroundings. If I can do this, anyone can.

So, Sunforged, far surpassing me in knowledge of on line marketing, the generosity of you sharing such an idea with all of us, just blows me away. In working together as a group, Search Engine Optimization, is only dependent on my finding the right keywords. "Well good luck with that," I told myself as I joined. I mean at least I will learn from the best in the Hub Pages Community.

So I Searched SEO

Okay, so I read a hub on SEO that said I needed to spend about 100 hours learning SEO! Oh no! I don't have that kind of time! I just started a 60 day challenge! 100 hours? No way. There has to be an easier way. I could read all day and night and have no clue, but videos, or sound bites, now that I can listen to and understand.

I found the coolest web site, however. They are selling a course/system called SEO Book, and yes, that's the name of the web site and where you can buy the book membership for $300. per month, if you are a large business. Of course it is for business, but Nelle Hoxie says to treat Hub Pages like a business, so... Right. No, I am not spending $300.00 per month, but I did sign up as an affiliate, and that is free. My affiliate link is not a part of this hub! Don't worry, I am not that kind of girl! If you want to check that out, just e-mail me by clicking the contact link to your right. If you want to buy into the membership, I will be happy to send you the link!

Now, I can't afford to buy the book membership, but there is all of this free stuff! All you have to do is sign up for free. That link will take you to sign up for the free stuff. (If you scroll down you can also sign up as an affiliate). The tools are for Mozilla Firefox, and they have the 4 Downloads all on the same page! Mozilla Firefox, Rank Checker, SEO Toolbar, and SEO for Firefox, are free, and they will blow you away. With the rank checker, on your Firefox Toolbar, you can see the page rank for the page you are on. It is instantly displayed. This has got to be a big help, when you are trying to place your back links! Of course you want to choose the best places, so the best ranked pages are going to get you more traffic!

A Simplified Version, for People Like Me

So the Kicker!

Again, I can read all day and night and have no more clue to SEO, or keyword optimization. Monetization to me is just another word. I know I can monetize my content, but I don't know how to monetize! That's the best part. I hope you all remember "Fun with Dick and Jane" that reading primer they used to use in schools, as part of the curriculum is now readily available on Amazon. But not "Fun with SEO and Keyword tools". Well, this man has thought of everything. On his overview page Allen Wall has a keyword tool, powered by Wordtracker. When you see what it does, you will be amazed. Click here to check out the tool.

Now here, at the Wordtracker.com web site, is where you can find the equivalent of "Fun with Dick and Jane" for SEO and keywords. It is free, and it is in PDF format. If you are anything like me, and don't know your keywords from the keys to your car, this book is for you. I am reading it now.

In the "story" a fictional company, that is literally going down the tubes, is considering web marketing. The distressed owner, having inherited a failing business, is concerned with the loss of revenue that will impact the community, due to the number of locals working for her company. While relaxing with a cup of coffee and reading a couple of articles, she realizes the Internet might not be a bad idea after all! She goes into the office and does a few Google searches, and then sends off letters to companies specializing in SEO. What she gets back is a group of e-mails, ranging from encouraging, to downright depressing.

Here's what I learned. Okay, I already knew that SEO is an acronym for Search Engine Optimization. Like that helps! What I learned was that there are three different types of writers.

Writers like me, for instance, write whatever we think someone else might like. Notice the problem? How do I know what someone in France is going to like? Or anywhere outside of my own silly mind. If you are like me, download and read the PDF.

Writers like Nell Hoxie write about what other people want to buy. Of course she writes brilliantly, but she has her finger on the pulse of the consumer. She finds out what people most want to buy, and then she sells it. She is very good, and if you want to make sales, you should check her hubs out.

Writers like Mark Knowles, now there is a man to follow, he writes what people want to read. In other words, Mark Knowles uses his knowledge of keywords to find out what people are searching for. He uses SEO to make sure they find what he has written. If you want to learn, and have more brains than I do (think Scarecrow from the Wizard of Oz) you will check out his hubs.

Help for the Hopeless

So here is the upshot of optimization. You might want to sell your ideas on gardening. In order to do that, you need to know several things. Who is your competition, and where do they rank in the search engines. What are the most commonly searched words for your topic, and how many times can you use those keywords in you article? You don't want to keep using the same word in every sentence. That is keyword stuffing, and the search engines just don't like it.

So what do the search engines like? They like it if someone stays on your page. The longer the reader stays, the better. If the click on your link, and see it is not what they want, and quickly click the back arrow, your rank drops.

So three important tips.

  1. Who exactly is your audience going to be, and what words will they use in the search engine. The Keyword tool will help you make that decision.
  2. How many related search words might you use, to make your content more visible. Checking the competition will help tremendously. You can use the words they are using, to anchor your text. Do not copy and paste, or steal anyone's content. Write quality articles.
  3. How are you going to market yourself. What social networking sites are you going to make sure you are an active part of? The Page Rank tool will help you decide where to spend your social time.

Now, say you've found someone who has a blog on your topic, and they are number one in the search. Go and post a comment on their blog. Make sure that whatever presence you are creating on the Internet is visible. In other words, I am Faybe Bay on Hub Pages. And I am Faybe Bay on Yahoo. I am Faybe Bay on Blogger, RedGage and my web site that is in the process of being built, as well as the three other domain names I purchased from GoDaddy. There is a Faybe Bay out there that isn't me, but I'm not sure if it's Twitter or Facebook, however, if she finds me, she may decide to promote me! Who knows?

Be a presence. Do not allow your presence to become something you are not. I am kind, and try to be both in my personal life and on the Internet, I try to stay active, even if it is just going to fubar. The more your name gets out there, the more readers you will have. It is just a matter of time.

This hub is such a fabulous discussion of things I've yet to understand, Faybe Bay-I see your Amazon books include the "for Dummies" series. I'm not even that advanced. Perhaps I could use "for the Pitiful."

But I am going to bookmark this and refer to it often.

Thank you!

Do the research as if you are trying to write for someone, like in the PDF. That PDF helped me more than you know!

Now that was a great hub. I am like you in the promoting category, which is why I figured the 60 day challenge would be exactly what I need. I downloaded the book you recommended and I am learning about SEO. Who knew a writer would need so much besides writing? Thanks.

Namaste.

Ditto here! I am a writer, not a promoter! Well if I have to double as my own agent, that's a problem. You will love the PDF. Just change the keywords (dog food) into your niche, and you will figure it out.

Hi Wavegirl, I have even tried singing myself to sleep, (in my head) to get rid of it. Just as I am drifting of to sleep I get that "flash of brilliance" But I am trying to learn to wait. I found some more great new tools to help us, I'll write about those next.

Rismayanti, thank you for reading. Yes it is work, but it will get easier.

"Faybe Bay is writing about SEO. This should be hilarious."---> and why is that ? I disagree. You're a good writer so it's easy for you to get into SEO topics. Oh and by the way,i'm going to interview you soon, i hope it's fine with you :) (as i'm going to promote 60dc members outside HP).

Keep writing,cheers. :)

Hi Skyfire, I just thought it would be hilarious, funny thing is I actually learned something. That was the most hilarious part. Now I have to figure out how to apply it to myself.

Interview me? I could never turn that down! I appreciate all the help I can get. Maybe that's where I've gone wrong, maybe I should have interviewed someone who knows what they are doing. :) It was most kind of you to even read this. My own family wants me to seek counseling. They think I have completely lost my mind, devoting myself to finding a way to make my writing pay. I figure, what's the worst that could happen? If I don't give this everything I've got, how will I ever know? I don't want to "wish I'd tried".

Be a presence - I think that's a great idea and that's exactly what I did. There is one point to watch though - if you're joining sites to promote your own work, it can be a good idea to pick a different name. Some sites don't like you promoting your own sites, so by using another name, you can disguise that somewhat.

I wish someone had told me that before I joined up to everything under the same name...!

Faybe Bay profile image

Faybe Bay Hub Author 2 years ago

I believe it depends, as I joined the other sites, like Fubar, then put links to lots of things on my page, but they have a blog as well, that I haven't done yet. I have had a little traffic from there, and if I really try, I bet I'd get more. As long as you are not overly promotional, I think it's okay.

And If I am not Faybe Bay somewhere, then I sign as my user, followed by aka Faybe Bay on Hub Pages.
