Before my son opened my eyes to animal cruelty, I thought that it was just about people who don't know how to treat their pets. I had known about PETA, but I thought they were just trying to save the seals, and foxes. Now that my eyes have been opened, I see more than I ever knew existed.

As a child I spent many summers on my Grandparents' farm. There was no cruelty there. Grandpa kept ponies, a couple of horses and the occasional sow or calf. Grandma kept chickens, and later Guinea hens, which roamed free. This was the type of farm I was familiar with, and I had seen how the egg farm, owned by my cousins' Grandparents was kept. Also what today would be called free range. As a matter of fact it was an all day job, starting before the crack of dawn, to manage these farms. Work would not end until after dinner time. Bed times were strictly observed, and no one was idle. Even as a visitor I helped gather eggs. The hens were actually friendly. The eggs were checked to see if they had been fertilized, only unfertilized eggs were ever used in cooking.

Why would you kill an unborn chick on an egg farm, right? Fertilized eggs were taken for incubation on some farms, while on others they were allowed to hatch naturally.

The world has changed, while none of us were looking. Farms that used to produce locally, small ones, were weeded out, for the sake of regulation and progress. Instead of getting eggs from a variety of egg producers locally, most eggs now come from factory farms.

Free range and pasture raised animals are coming into popularity, for those who have not decided to go vegetarian, or vegan yet. The prices on some of these items may seem incredibly high, when compared to their distant cousins, the factory farm.

The above video is a reaction to, a video that was a reaction to, Paul McCartney's Glass Walls Video... Yes, children get flustered but basically that is what he's trying to say. The video below is a video about why the YouTube poster decided to take the reaction video down.

Ironically it is again from the mouths of children and teens that we as adults can see, what is going on in this world is just wrong.

I warn that the girl below does use some colorful adjectives (profanity) but I decided she needed to be heard. If I am told to change it I will, but as I think at times extreme situations bring out the rage in all of us, I think she deserves to be heard.

The following video should only be viewed if you have a strong stomach, and should never be viewed by children. If you plan on viewing this video, please have your children leave the room.

I will tell you before you start that there will be things, as described in the above two videos, that you do not want to see. Sufficed to say, it is here for you to view because it needs to be seen.

People the world over have choices to make when they walk into the supermarket. There will be signs and sales, all sorts of distractions. You have to feed your family, after all. So Vegan, Vegetarian, or omnivore, the choices are wide. The only way to decide to be healthy is to know what is in your food. Genetically altering the growth of animals, mistreating them, torturing them, it makes these decisions much more difficult.

I can not tell you to never eat meat again for the rest of your life, but I can tell you that eating Kosher may not be the answer either. I had believed, as I was told by my mother-in-law that Kosher meant the animals did not suffer. Naively I had intended to show you the difference, but what I found instead was the following video.

There is one way, and one way only, to know what is going on your plate. Educate yourself. Ask yourself some key questions. Then do some investigations of your own. What types of food alternatives are out there, and how might it affect your food budget?

Ironically the healthiest portions of our population eat very little meant, supplementing their diets with rice and beans, or legumes. The highest instances of diseases such as cancer, heart disease and high blood pressure are not in Mexico, Asia, France, or Italy. All of these nations have their fair amount of robust individuals, and you would be amazed that they eat very filling meals, but the meat in those meals is home grown, not factory farmed, and they eat a lot less of it. Here in the US we have been taught that "Pork is the other White Meat" and eggs are okay to be eaten every day. That may have been true fifty years ago, when local producers provided for local markets; before science had come up with ways to make the animals grow faster and larger, to feed an ever growing population.

My philosophy of life has always been to live and let live, your choices are your own. I also believed that education was the key to a better world. I still believe that.

It is my son's gift to me, and my gift to you, an education about what is really on your plate. Whether you walk away and join PETA for more information, or you just decide it is too much to do anything about, think about this:

There are many people that are out of work in this country, and around the world. The people who are working on these factory farms and in these slaughterhouses have jobs. When they get those jobs they are given strict guidelines as to how the job is to be done. If they are following those guidelines, and this is what they are doing, something is wrong with that company. If they are "caught on tape" breaking the rules because they can, then those are the people who are really responsible for our failing economy. To use being "underpaid" as an excuse for animal cruelty is beyond comprehension. Do you kick you dog because your paycheck is too small? Of course not.

Would you be happy to have a job? That is what I am talking about. If given a job, you'd do it the right way. Not like this.
