Playing in The Sprinklers: It's What Kids Do
78Please watch This Video First
Another E-Mail from My Brother, The Inventor.
I remember playing in the sprinklers as a kid. There was always a reason to play in the water, whether it was a sprinkler, the rain or the puddles. Where there is water, there will be kids playing. Playing in the water, it's just what kids do.
Trying to keep all of my stories in perspective here. My brother sent me the above video. I knew I wanted to do another hub on things we can do with our kids, things that don't cost anything. As far as I am concerned you can break out the sprinkler, or just have the kids gather around the monitor and watch that video. I have watched it over and over and I can't stop smiling. These are not human kids, but the are kids just the same.
Playing in water is what all sorts of kids do, and not just ours.
Other kids playing in the Sprinklers
The video to the right is about a four month old Newfoundland playing in the sprinkler. After the initial fun wears off he must be coaxed back in.
Water play is not exclusive to human kids, but a fun activity for all sorts of kids that you might not expect to see playing in the water. For instance, I have a cat that insists on playing in the water. He has even gone swimming with the ducks, although I think that was an accident. I don't think he realized the water was deep.
In my adventures looking for videos of children playing in the sprinklers, I found so many other "kids" playing in the water, that I couldn't help but bring them all back to share with you.
So if it is a nice day, take out the sprinkler and set it up, get the kids in their bathing suits and go out and play, like you did when you were a kid. If you haven't got a sprinkler, the hose will do.
If you happen to live in an apartment, then perhaps there is a community or city park with sprinklers. Where I live, in West Palm Beach, Florida, there are many such parks. There is one downtown, in City Place. There is also one in Palm Springs right next to the Library, Water Department and Fire Department. Still another between Olive and Dixie on Summa Street called The South Olive Community Center.
To find a park near you, just google search Community Centers. You might be surprised what is available. If there is not one nearby, perhaps you can get some people together to start one in your community. I found an interesting web site called Do Something.Org where you can get involved. You can submit your project, apply for a grant to get it off the ground, and even get others involved in that dream. You can connect with them on Facebook and Twitter as well.
Well, did I get off topic? Perhaps, but what have all of my hubs really been about? They are about making a difference, in your world, your life, your community.
When we get back to basics, down to earth, back to what simple living is, it all boils down to this: if you can make one change what would it be? More time with your kids? Cleaner air? More laughter? Longer life?
We all have needs. Perhaps these past few years you have needed more money. I know that I have spent my whole life working to be able to take a vacation with my family. When I finally had the money for it, I got hit by a truck. That is the truth, no lie, no joke. Every time I have had the time and the money, something went wrong.
So maybe the scope of my dream was wrong. I thought that what I needed was money, and if I had that, then I would be able to afford to take time off. Now I am off, laid off. I have very little money. I have plenty of time. I haven't starved. I am not dead. It was not the disaster everyone claimed it would be.
I have always wanted to make a difference in the world. I wanted to write something that would bring about a change in the world for the better. I have been out of work for three months and seven days. I have reconnected with all of my family, some of which I hadn't spoken to in many years. We just lost track of each other. I am making changes in my life, and I have seen those changes affecting other lives.
I don't have to change the mind of every person who reads a paragraph of my work here. I only have to change one. That one will go on to change another. It is a chain reaction.
My brother sent me an e-mail. It made me smile and remember a simpler time, when firemen would open the fire hydrant in the city so the kids could play in the water and cool off. A time of home made hand cranked ice cream, corn on the cob and watermelon. Eating outside and the seeds and juice just dripping all over us, and we laughed. Life was sweet, as sweet as the grass, and the watermelon. Clouds were billowy scenes for the wildest imagination. Sprinklers weren't on timers because we knew we'd never run out of water...
That caused my chain reaction today. I hope that these memories, the videos and perhaps the smiles and laughter, will start your chain reaction too. What do you remember, and what can you do to start the chain reaction in your neck of the woods?
Lovely Day In The Fire Hydrant
Sorry, this has nothing to do with kids, just Sprinklers, and a Rainbow Conspiracy. I hope you laugh with me.

Thanks for the memories! I remember playing in the sprinklers when I was a kid. Great videos
HAHAHHAAAA!! Sorry Faybe but that cracked me up. It took me quuite a while to get the hang of country gravy, as I never had a recipe, just kind of made it. The thing is, not all flours are created equal, some have more thickening ability then others, and I have made more then my fair share of white tasteless mush. Im glad your feeling better now!
HAHAHAHA oh, man. Sorry to have gone off about gravy on your really nice hub, but anytime I need a giggle Im going to read this again.
I vividly remember playing in the sprinklers as a kid. Also sitting in a tin washtub full of nice cool water - sometimes we'd go get "snow" from the "Ice House" (cooling was with an insulated box into which a block of ice was placed regularly to keep the perishables from spoiling). People either went to the ice house to buy it and place it in their own ice boxes or the more affluent had it delivered and placed in there.
Every household had an ice-pick with which to chip off some chunks from the block in the ice box for iced tea or lemonade. In our house no carbonated beverages were permitted and I still have no taste for them.
The ice house wasn't far away, easily accessible from anywhere in the small town,- actually just on the other side of the RR track which ran along parallel with one of the main residential streets. There were fine shavings from the big machines which cut up the ice into marketable blocks for the "ice boxes" and they gladly gave the kids bags of it. We made our own "snow cones" (no telling how much dirt from the ice-house floor was mixed in with the "snow"! But none of us died. LOL. Also none of us had any immunity deficiencies! hahaha!)
The snow in the wash tubs was sooooooooooo nice and cool to sit in. We had water fights from tub to tub, too.
Another delight was rolling in the grass - especially in one terraced yard in the neighborhood. The people who lived there never came out and shooed us away, either!
At the ranch in far ARID West Texas where rain is scarse, after one, the deer tracks in the big puddles have almost turned them into mush by the time the water has dried up! I've watched them playing in the puddles from a distance and it's something to behold. For sure - kids of all kinds love to romp and play in the water. Might as well save one's breath as to caution a kid not to wade in the mud puddles on the way home from school after a rain! LOL
I really enjoyed this and the videos are marvelous! Thanks for calling YOU to my attention! I'm most impressed! Thanks for becoming a fan!
Fun and enlightening hub! I miss playing in the sprinklers. My dad use to run the garden hoses out back, cut holes in them and let the fun begin. I have 4 nephews and a niece , they love the sprinklers. Even the two teens still love them. Who doesn't love a good sprinkling?! Love this hub, great writing, and so much fun to read.

Thanks for the memories and yes you sparked lovely memories of my own. I loved to go to the park and run through the sprinklers that the city turned on.I loved those days, the air, the saltwater, and the great ice cream. I grew up in Brooklyn and we had it all.
